Thousands of digital roles are going unfilled across high-growth sectors, while artificial intelligence and automation are expected to significantly reshape the UK workforce.

The Women Pivoting to Digital Taskforce’s Policy Recommendations set out six proposals for government that identify roles at risk of automation, connect reskilling programmes more closely with labour market demand, and create more opportunities for women to career change into digital roles.

Recommendations:

Identifying and preparing at-risk workers for mid-career transition

  • The Government should publish an Automation and Redundancy Risk Dashboard that shows roles at risk of automation and how AI is impacting the labour market.
  • The Government should develop a comprehensive strategy to transition and reskill workers in roles that are high-risk of being automated into in-demand jobs.

Driving employer demand for reskilled talent

  • Local Mayoral Authorities should create a register where employers commit to interviewing people graduating from DfE-backed reskilling programmes.
  • Provide wage subsidies to SMEs that hire women taking part in the TechFirst Women's programme.

Supporting women into digital roles through guidance

  • The Government should publish evidence and research that tracks employment outcomes from the TechFirst Women’s programme.
  • The Equalities Office should produce practical guidance for employers about how to deliver women-focused internal reskilling programmes under the Equality Act 2010.

Without coordinated action, the UK risks managing workforce displacement reactively, widening existing inequalities and allowing digital talent shortages to continue limiting productivity, business growth and economic competitiveness.
