As the UK looks ahead to its G20 Presidency in 2027, the International Regulatory Strategy Group (IRSG) is calling for a focus on growth, investment and international cooperation.

Commenting on the report, Farmida Bi, Chair of the IRSG Council said:

The UK's G20 Presidency in 2027 will be an important opportunity to shape the future of the global financial system. The challenge is not a lack of rules, but ensuring international cooperation can keep at pace with rapid technological change and an increasingly fragmented world. The IRSG's recommendations focus on practical steps to strengthen regulatory coherence, support innovation and mobilise private capital to drive growth and resilience across the global economy.

The IRSG G20 Position Paper - Priorities for the UK 2027 G20 Presidency sets out a practical agenda to help modernise the global financial and regulatory system at a time of increasing fragmentation and rapid technological change.

The paper argues that the UK has a unique opportunity to bring countries together behind a more coherent, agile and future-focused approach to financial regulation.

The IRSG recommends that the UK Presidency focus on three priorities:

  • Modernising international rulemaking to reduce fragmentation and help global standards keep pace with markets and technology.
  • Supporting the digital future of finance, including AI, digital assets, tokenisation and cross-border payments.
  • Unlocking private capital to drive growth, resilience, energy security and long-term investment.

The paper is about making international cooperation work better delivering practical outcomes, supporting innovation and ensuring global financial markets remain open, connected and competitive.
