Net Zero Delivery Summit
Marking the halfway point between COP27 in Egypt and COP28 in the UAE, the Summit marked a crucial milestone in the journey towards a sustainable future.
COP28 begins soon and will be a pivotal moment for government, policymakers, NGOs and businesses to come together to reach agreements on routes and solutions to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Alongside these formal negotiations, the swell of private sector activity scheduled to take place on the fringes has a critical role to play in helping to bring all countries and companies together to drive forward practical progress towards net zero. The City Corporation are proud to be continuing their longstanding presence at COP with the Rt Hon the Lord Mayor and Policy Chairman fronting a programme of engagements on 4th – 5th December. Featuring a range of themes including transition finance, scaling a credible voluntary carbon market, nature finance and city decarbonisation, we will seek to highlight the important role private finance can and must take in the transition to net zero, and showcase the UK as a well-established one-stop shop for green and sustainable finance.

16:30 – 17:30 GST, EY Pavilion, Green Zone Panel discussion: Growing trust in voluntary carbon markets
Carbon markets play a vital role in climate action, supporting innovation and driving finance to countries and projects that need it. However, their growth is threatened by a crisis of trust as questions are raised about the integrity and scalability of offsetting. Corporations are increasingly taking on climate targets and looking to carbon markets to help deliver additional mitigation as they move towards net zero. At the same time, public discourse focuses on concerns about the integrity of mitigation action through voluntary carbon markets (VCM). This panel will explore how to help ensure public trust in VCMs, and clarify how VCMs can finance climate ambition. Opening remarks will be provided by the Policy Chairman, Chris Hayward. Key topics include:
16:30 – 20:00 GST, Capital Club Panel discussion followed by reception: Transition plans: the policy landscape and implementation
Transition plans are an emergent feature of climate policy, with the UK leading the way on mandatory transition plan policy. Businesses are set to come under increasing pressure to put in place climate transition plans or to contribute information needed for their counterparties’ transition plans. Framed against the policy backdrop in the UK and other jurisdictions, this discussion will focus on what the push for climate transition plans means for businesses across the globe and explore the practical implications of implementing them. The Policy Chairman will participate on the panel.
